Campers Helping Campers

Amici is happy to report that this past year we’ve seen unprecedented support from young people through organizations like EchoAge, which assists in the set up of donations given to a charity in honour of a special occasion. Through EchoAge, we’ve received many donations celebrating the birthdays of young camp enthusiasts who want to give back! A huge thanks goes out to Abigail, Sydney and Bailey, Taylor, Gwen, and Topher, for letting us share in their birthday celebrations and for sharing the gift of summer camp! If you’d like to donate to Amici in lieu of gifts for your special event, contact us at our office to find out how!

Another Amazing Summer With Amici’s Partner Camps

Amici couldn’t send children to camp without the vital support of our partner camps. Every year they provide a safe and positive environment in which all campers can grow to realize their full potential. Thank you Amici partner camps! Amici is growing and we were so excited to welcome three new partner camps in summer 2014, YWCA Camp Tapawingo, Kettleby Valley Camp, and Canadian Adventure Camp! We love to witness the campers in their element while camp is in full swing, so Tory, Christine, and Kate ventured out across Ontario to visit both new and returning partner camps this past summer. Camp Wabikon and Canadian Adventure Camp both welcomed us to their Temagami homes, and offered up sunny skies, cheery campers, exciting and delicious mealtimes, and amazing programming! We witnessed tuck and leather working at Camp Kandalore, swimming and tennis at Camp Wenonah, canoeing and dance at Tapawingo, and kids enjoying the beautiful Ontario wilderness everywhere we visited.

Past Amici Camper – Current Camper Role Model

For over 48 years, our supporters have sent hundreds of children and youth to summer camp, many have continued on to be staff at their camps, becoming role models for the next generation of campers. Khamil Almade has come full circle, starting out as an Amici camper at YMCA Camp Pine Crest at 13 years old, and has just finished his second year as a counsellor, and entered his first year of studies at Queen’s University.

When Khamil thinks back on his first summer at Pine Crest he reflects: “I had no idea what I was getting into. I remember arriving at camp, and sitting on my bunk, and my counsellor coming in and introducing himself. I told him that I was kind of bored, and my counsellor replied ‘I promise you, you will never say that again.’” Khamil’s counsellor had been right, and his experience at camp turned into an exciting adventure that included meeting his best friends, canoeing out into the wilderness for days on end, learning to balance being social and focusing on the task at hand, and building confidence in all areas of life. Khamil has found that the skills that he’s learned after attending summer camp have been transferable to his academic, social, and personal life saying that “if you can handle getting lost in the middle of Georgian Bay, you can handle a midterm [exam]“. Khamil hopes to return to YMCA Camp Pine Crest for summer 2015, once again as staff and role model for campers that are just like he once was! Thank you Khamil, for sharing your story with Amici.

Amici’s Amazing Volunteers

Amici donors and volunteers have enabled more and more deserving children to experience the magic of summer camp! As our program grows to serve more campers, volunteer involvement is vital. Charlotte Scott, is one such volunteer who has consistently shown dedication and passion toward sending kids to camp! Charlotte has worked with Amici now for 3 years, volunteering her time during our busy spring/early summer season. Her enthusiasm and energy is infectious and we would like to thank her for her continued commitment to Amici campers! Charlotte spends her summers at Camp Tanamakoon, and this past summer was the head of Canoeing. Thank you, Charlotte for all that you do!
